TCU’s kicker enters the NCAA’s transfer portal
TCU kicker Cole Bunce is the latest player to enter the NCAA’s transfer portal, a source confirmed.
Bunce is scheduled to graduate in May, and will have one year of eligibility remaining for the 2020 season. It’s unknown what schools he’s considering at this time.
Other Horned Frogs from last year’s team that have entered the portal include quarterbacks Mike Collins and Justin Rogers; defensive tackle Karter Johnson; defensive end Adam Plant Jr.; and linebacker Jacoby Simpson.
Bunce, TCU’s kickoff specialist and long field goal kicker, was involved in a scooter accident the day before fall camp last season. Injuries sustained from that accident sidelined him for much of his senior season, but he returned and was healthy enough to handle kickoff duties later in the season.
Bunce could only kickoff and then sprinted to the sidelines to avoid contact. He kicked off 14 times with six touchbacks on the season.
Bunce appeared in just four games, though, which allowed him to obtain a redshirt for the 2019 season.
For his TCU career, Bunce made 10-of-16 field goal attempts in 44 games played. His long is 43 yards, the game-winner at Texas Tech during the 2017 season. He also made the go-ahead field goal against Stanford in the Alamo Bowl that season.
Of 239 career kickoffs, Bunce has 87 touchbacks.
Along with Bunce, TCU kicker Jonathan Song has graduated and is out of eligibility.
The Horned Frogs will go into next season with Griffin Kell expected to handle most of the kicking duties as a sophomore.
Kell, an Arlington High product, kicked in 11 games last season, going 3-of-4 on field goal attempts with a long of 52 yards. He also kicked off 33 times, including 12 touchbacks.
TCU opens its season next year at Cal on Sept. 5.
