TCU football vs. Iowa State Cyclones updates: Frogs WR KaVontae Turpin exits with injury
TCU finds itself in a dogfight with Iowa State at the break. It’s tied 7-7 at the half.
Here are the takeaways from the first half --
1. Penalties. These officials haven’t been been shy to make their presence felt. The referees have sent multiple players out of the game for “knee pad” violations. But the biggest call so far has been overturning a targeting call that knocked TCU wide receiver KaVontae Turpin out in the second quarter.
Turpin had a 24-yard reception but endured a blow to the helmet from Cyclones defensive back Datrone Young. Young was flagged for targeting, but that ended up being overturned after review.
Turpin walked off the field under his own power, and then headed to the locker rooms.
But TCU has been penalized four times for 45 yards so far. The Frogs entered the game as the least penalized team yardage-wise, giving up just 38.2 yards a game on penalties.
2. Robinson’s good and bad. Shawn Robinson turned the ball over once again. He lost a fumble on a sack, his third lost fumble in as many games. That set up the Cyclones TD drive.
But Robinson bounced back on the next drive. He completed 5-of-5 passes for 57 yards, capped with a 10-yard TD pass to Taye Barber.
3. Stats to know. TCU is out-playing Iowa State, at least statistically. The Frogs have gained 173 total yards of offense compared to Iowa State’s 76. The Frogs are also 7-for-11 on third down compared to the Cyclones’ 2-for-5. But, once again, the difference is in the impact defensive plays.
Iowa State has caused the only turnover of the game. TCU, meanwhile, has no takeaways and no sacks.
