The top college golf teams are coming to town. How TCU stacks up.

TCU senior Turner MacLean and the rest of his golf teammates are ready for the Nike Collegiate Invitational at Colonial Country Club. The Frogs get to see how they stack up against the best programs in the country with the advantage of having a little home-course knowledge.

“Regardless of how many times you play Colonial, it’s still a good test of golf,” said MacLean, a Country Day alum who grew up in the area. “We’re pretty familiar with it and we know how to manage the course maybe a little bit better than others do, so we feel like we’re going to be prepared.

“We’re ready. We can’t wait.”

Tournament play begins 7:45 a.m. on Sunday and concludes with a final round beginning at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. The tournament is open and free to the public.

Reigning national champion and No. 3 University of Oklahoma headlines the field of 15 schools. Other ranked programs include No. 5 Vanderbilt, No. 8 Florida, No. 10 Texas, No. 11 Stanford, No. 13 Clemson, No. 18 Duke, No. 20 USC and No. 24 Wake Forest.

The top players are USC senior Justin Suh, ranked No. 2 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, and Texas freshman Cole Hammer, ranked No. 9.

As MacLean said, Colonial will provide everyone in the field a challenge.

“Hitting fairways is going to be really important this week,” MacLean said. “With the rain we’ve had, the rough is really healthy so it’s going to be imperative that we hit some fairways.

“It is a position golf course. It’s not a golf course you can overpower. It’s not going to favor a long hitter over a short hitter per se, so you have to be in the right spots.”
