TCU drops second in a row as Horns score final 21 points; Robinson throws 2 costly INTs
The Horned Frogs dropped their second straight game this season, this one coming to Texas, 31-16 at Darrell K. Royal - Texas Memorial Stadium on Saturday.
The Longhorns scored the final 21 points of the game, including a 38-yard pass from Sam Ehlinger to Southlake Carroll’s Lil Jordan Humphrey with 3:18 left that put this one out of reach.
TCU quarterback Shawn Robinson did not have his best game, throwing two interceptions, including one to UT freshman Caden Sterns in the third-quarter, which Sterns returned to the TCU 2. Ehlinger ran it in one play later to give Texas a 24-16 lead.
__________
TCU didn’t have the most impressive first half, but it took a 13-10 lead over the University of Texas into the locker rooms.
The Frogs put together a touchdown drive late in the first half. The 47-yard drive ended with a 1-yard TD pass from Shawn Robinson to Jalen Reagor on a back-shoulder fade.
TCU settled for field goals on its two other scoring drives in the first half.
But this has the makings of a dogfight in the second half. Texas had success running up the middle, and should’ve won the field position battle but coach Tom Herman made an odd call to go for it on fourth-down in TCU territory despite leading 10-6 at the time.
The Longhorns (167) and the Frogs (170) have gained similar yardage, and the Longhorns lead the turnover battle (1-0) and time of possession (16:14 to 13:46).
The worst news for the Frogs is an injury to left guard Cordel Iwuagwu, who exited in the first quarter and has yet to return. Iwuagwu started every game last season and this season, and provides a veteran presence on the left side.
Trey Elliott replaced Iwuagwu at left guard.
