College notes: TCU men’s golf takes lead at NCAA Regional

Giulio Castagnara shot a 4-under 68, helping TCU take the lead Friday in the second round of the NCAA Washington Regional in Bremerton, Wash.

The Frogs shot a 5-under 283 and lead with a 564. Alabama-Birmingham is one shot back at 565 and Baylor is fifth at 573.

Castagnara tied for the second-lowest round of his career to move into second, two strokes off the lead.

Chelso Barrett registered his second straight 1-under 71 to move to 2 under for and 15th overall.

Julien Brun is 1 under after a 71. Paul Barjon followed his opening-round 68 with a 1-over 73 to enter the final round 12th overall. Andrew Presley also carded a 73.

The low five teams advance to the NCAA finals.

At the Lubbock Regional, Texas Tech (552) leads, Texas (555) is second and Houston (561) fourth.

In other TCU news:

▪ Track & field: TCU scored in all three events on the first day of the Big 12 Outdoor Championships in Ames, Iowa. Paola Miranda finished fifth in the women’s hammer throw at 186 feet, 2 inches; Aaron Tombleson was seventh in the men’s hammer (178-3), and Makena Schroder was seventh in the women’s javelin (141-0).

Shot clock changes

The NCAA Men’s Basketball Rules Committee recommended reducing the shot clock from 35 to 30 seconds among a series of changes aimed at speeding up a game that has reached historic lows in scoring.

The panel also recommended expanding the restricted arc for block/charge calls from 3 to 4 feet and reducing second-half timeouts by one per team.
