UTA women walloped by Sun Belt leader UALR

Shanity James scored 17 points and Arkansas-Little Rock held UT Arlington to 32.6 percent shooting on the way to a 66-38 victory in Sun Belt Conference women’s basketball Saturday.

The Trojans remained perfect in conference play at 9-0 and upped their season record to 16-2. The Mavericks fell to 9-9 and 3-6.

“There is a reason they are undefeated in the Sun Belt and I think they really showed why,” UTA coach Krista Gerlich said. “I thought for the first six to eight minutes we really battled and followed our game plan, but when [Rebekah] Van Dijk has to sit down it hurts us offensively, and we didn’t have players step up and stick to the game plan.

“Against a team like Little Rock if you give them any space they are going to make you pay.”

Van Dijk was limited to 22 minutes because of early foul trouble. She was still able to score 11 points. She was the only Mavericks player in double figures.

UTA also had 17 turnovers.
