Texas Wesleyan launches new women’s team as part of quest for Olympic glory

Texas Wesleyan announced the creation of a women’s flag football program, on Wednesday, set to debut in 2026.

TWU will be the first collegiate program in the state of Texas to support a women’s flag football program. With the inclusion of flag football in the 2028 Summer Olympics, in Los Angeles, the university hopes to contribute to the Team USA roster

The team expects to compete nationwide once the program launches and will field 25-30 student-athletes who will play at Karen Cramer Stadium when the complex is finished.

TWU is still searching for a head coach for the program.

Fort Worth resident and commissioner of the Women’s Pro Flag Football League Marjorie Herrera Lewis explained her excitement at the program’s announcement.

“I am thrilled that Texas Wesleyan is adding women’s flag football to its sports program. Flag football is fast becoming one of the most popular participation sports in the country, and once again, Texas Wesleyan is ahead of the curve,” said Lewis. “I’m happy to make this donation and plan to attend games for many years. What a thrill it is to be at the ground floor of bringing this sports opportunity for women to the campus. What’d I’d give to be a couple decades younger!”

Women’s flag football is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, with nearly half a million girls aged six to 17 playing the sport, a 50% rise in participation from 2019 to 2023.
