TCU men’s basketball lands its first transfer portal commitment

TCU men’s basketball has landed its first transfer portal commitment.

Long Beach State guard Gavin Sykes announced his commitment to the Horned Frogs on Instagram Wednesday evening.

Sykes was voted the Big West Freshman of the Year after he averaged 19.4 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists while shooting nearly 39% from 3. Sykes was also a second-team All-Big West selection.

The 6-foot-4 guard set numerous program records in what was one of the greatest seasons by a freshman in program history. Sykes broke freshmen records for most points in a single game (39) and most points in a season (542).

In just one season Sykes shot up to No. 24 all-time in scoring for Long Beach State. His 19.4 average was the sixth most by a freshman last season behind AJ Dybantsa (BYU), Darius Acuff (Arkansas), Ebuka Okorie (Stanford), Cameron Boozer (Duke) and Caleb Wilson (North Carolina). At least five players from that list are expected to be top-10 picks in the NBA draft.

Sykes was a Kyle Macy Award finalist, given to the top freshman player in the nation.

Sykes will join a TCU roster that includes returnees Brock Harding, Tanner Toolson, Micah Robinson and Xavier Edmonds. The Horned Frogs are also bringing in junior college standout Trent Lincoln and Ryan Hunt along with Serbian forward Milos Sojic.

With his size and shooting ability, Sykes could start at shooting guard in the backcourt alongside Harding.
