After Big 12 record outing, former Grapevine QB receives two more national awards
Former Grapevine standout and Texas Tech freshman Alan Bowman was named the National Quarterback of the Week by both Davey O’Brien and the Manning Awards following his record-breaking performance vs. Houston.
It’s Bowman’s sixth and seventh honors of the week. He also received Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, Walter Camp National Player of the Week, Manning Award Star of the Week, the Davey O’Brien “Great 8” list and the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Player of the Week.
In only his third career game and second start, Bowman threw for 605 yards on 45-of-59 passing, which broke a Big 12 freshman record for passing yards in a single game. He broke former Tech QB Patrick Mahomes’ record of 598 from the 2014 season.
Bowman was six yards shy of the NCAA freshman mark of 611 set by Nevada’s David Neill in 1998 and was the third freshman in FBS history to throw for 600 or more yards in a game.
It was the 18th time in FBS history where a QB threw for 600 yards in a game and the fifth time a Red Raider had done so, joining Mahomes, B.J. Symons, Graham Harrell and Cody Hodges.
Through three games and two starts in his collegiate career, Bowman has completed 70.7 percent of his passes (94-of-133) for 1,160 yards and eight touchdowns with no interceptions. He currently ranks second nationally in passing yards per game (386.7) as well as completions per game (31.3) and third for total offense per game (392.7).
The Red Raiders enter this weekend’s Big 12 opener at Oklahoma State as the nation’s leader for both total yards (624.3 yards per game) and passing yards (448.7 yards per game). Tech also ranks third for scoring offense (55.7 points per game) and rushing touchdowns (13).
During a 4-year career with Grapevine, Bowman finished 11th all-time in Texas high school football history in both career TDs (119) and career yards (11,393). He was named district MVP as a junior and senior, when he threw for over 3,500 yards and 38 TDs.
