Former Grapevine star QB sets Big 12 record with Texas Tech. He’s a true freshman
Former Grapevine quarterback Alan Bowman got thrown into the fire during Texas Tech’s first game of the season. Starter McLane Carter went down with an injury and Bowman had to step in as a true freshman.
Tech lost to Ole Miss, but Bowman shined in his first college game going 29 of 49 for 273 yards and a TD.
Two weeks later and Bowman has been named Walter Camp National Player of the Week after hitting the record book vs. Houston.
In Tech’s 63-49 win on Saturday, Bowman threw for a Big 12 freshman record 605 yards, passing Patrick Mahomes’ previous mark. Mahomes now plays in the NFL with Kansas City.
Bowman also finished six yards short of the NCAA freshman passing record set by Nevada’s David Neill in 1998. It’s only the third time in FBS history that a freshman QB has thrown for 600 or more yards in a single game.
It was the 18th time in FBS history where a QB threw for 600 yards in a game and the fifth time a Red Raider had done so, joining Mahomes, B.J. Symons, Graham Harrell and Cody Hodges.
Bowman has led the Red Raiders to a 2-1 record. He’s completed 70.7 percent of his passes in three games with 1,160 yards passing and 8 touchdowns, and no picks. He ranks second nationally in passing yards per game (386.7) as well as completions per game (31.3) and third for total offense per game (392.7).
On Saturday, Bowman threw 43 of 59 and 5 TDs. The Red Raiders reached the 60-point mark for the second-straight week after not previously scoring 60 or more points in consecutive weeks since 2005.
Bowman was 22 of 25 for 282 yards and 2 TDs last week vs. Lamar.
One of the best to wear the Grapevine jersey, Bowman won 27 games in his final three seasons with the Mustangs. He finished 11th all-time in Texas high school football history in both career TDs (119) and career yards (11,393).
Bowman was named district MVP as a junior and senior. He threw for over 3,500 yards and 38 TDs as a senior.
