Dez tweets, Witten’s debut and Hitchens shines in KC. Your ex-Cowboys Week 1 recap
Former members of your favorite team are like ex-girlfriends.
You don’t really want to know how they’re doing, but you occasionally check on them from time-to-time.
The Dallas Cowboys had some former members of the franchise who were continuing their professional careers both on and off the field during the opening weekend of the NFL season last Sunday.
1. Dez Bryant, NFL Free Agent
It would be difficult to recap Dez Bryant’s departure and the dramatic offseason that ensued in this space. And it continued last Sunday, when the outspoken wide receiver live-tweeted the Cowboys’ 16-8 to the Panthers in Charlotte.
2. Jason Witten, Analyst for ESPN’s ‘Monday Night Football’
Witten didn’t exactly sparkle in the preseason. And his regular-season debut in the booth seems to be getting mixed reviews.
3. Anthony Hitchens, linebacker, Kansas City Chiefs
The Cowboys surrendered 147 yards on the ground to the Panthers in a loss. Hitchens, who signed with the Chiefs as a free agent during the offseason, led his team in tackles (15 total, 7 solo) during a 38-28 win over the Chargers.
4. Tony Romo, NFL in-game analyst for CBS
There’s a certain pocket of Cowboys’ fans who have a bizarre obsession with Romo coming out of retirement and returning to the team. But it’s possible that he’s gotten even better this season after a strong first in the booth.
5. Orlando Scandrick, cornerback, Kansas City Chiefs
After being cut by the Redskins, Scandrick was signed by the Chiefs in late August. Despite a quick turnaround, he still played as the third corner and was on the field for 83 percent of his team’s defensive snaps in a 38-28 win over the Chargers.
6. Alfred Morris, running back, San Francisco 49ers
Like Scandrick, Morris was a late addition to the roster. He wound-up splitting carries with fellow back Matt Breida, but neither were able to put up good numbers against a strong Vikings’ front-seven.
