Frigid conditions and freezing rain expected to hit North Texas midweek
A winter weather event is in the forecast for all of North and Central Texas starting Wednesday night, according to a release by the National Weather Service.
Arctic air is expected to bring frigid conditions to the region starting Wednesday and continue into Saturday, and wintry precipitation is likely Wednesday and Thursday, according to the release.
There’s a 60% of sleet or frozen rain and a 1 in 3 chance of “significant disruption” across the region because of hazardous travel, frozen pipes, power outages from icing and more.
Below freezing rain could start Wednesday afternoon over western North Texas and affect the rest of Central and North Texas by Wednesday night. Precipitation should move east by Thursday afternoon. However, travel impacts could extend into Friday, according to the release.
As of Sunday, there was a high probability of any ice and snow occurring in Tarrant County midweek, and there’s a medium probability that ice accumulates over 0.1” and sleet or snow accumulates over 1” in the county.
The release stresses that the forecast values are still early, and more details will be available throughout the week. The weather service urges residents to monitor the forecast for any changes, consider altering travel plans, wrap pipes and stock up on essentials.
