Icy roads considered unsafe in Fort Worth area Sunday after winter storm

Travel conditions across Fort Worth and North Texas are not considered safe for driving on Sunday, as ice continues to build on most roads and temperatures stay well below freezing.

It is still possible the Dallas-Fort Worth area will see a bit more sleet and snowfall midday Sunday, though the heaviest snow has already passed, according to the National Weather Service. But dangerously low temperatures in the teens will make it hard to clear roads any time soon.

From 7 p.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday, there were 75 stranded motorists in Fort Worth, a spokesperson for the Fort Worth Police Department told the Star-Telegram. That number is much higher than normal, the spokesperson said.

There were 17 accidents overnight, compared to 10 the night before, and there were 13 weather-related traffic hazards and 24 transports to shelter, the police spokesperson said.

Temperatures in Fort Worth will stay below freezing until at least midday Tuesday. The temp hovered around 14 most of the early hours of Sunday morning, and it will peak at just 24 degrees in the afternoon. Monday’s expected high is just 29 degrees. That will result in ice, sleet and snow remaining on the ground and on roads for the next 24 hours at least.

TxDOT crews have been working around the clock to apply de-icers and plow sleet and snow off major roadways, according to Texas Department of Transportation spokesperson Val Lopez. TxDOT is giving special attention to bridges and overpasses, he said.

TxDOT, Oncor and Fort Worth police all recommend staying at home and off the roads Sunday unless absolutely necessary to allow restoration teams and first responders to do their jobs.

A spokesperson for Oncor said Sunday morning that response times to power outages would be slower than normal due to road conditions. As of Sunday morning, there were almost 2,000 Tarrant County residents without power. That number could rise as ice builds up on power lines and wind gusts rise.

The Texas Division of Emergency Management said early Sunday morning that thousands of roads across Texas are covered with ice this morning, including hundreds in DFW.
