Hail, lightning may spoil Friday night plans in North Texas. Here’s the latest
A cold front will bring lower temperatures and rain chances to North Texas over the weekend.
The front will move south out of Oklahoma into the Metroplex on Friday, Sept. 5, according to the National Weather Service Fort Worth. Ahead of the front, isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop across the region in the afternoon and into the evening.
Frequent lightning strikes, isolated damaging downburst winds and marginally severe hail (up to quarter-sized) will be the main threats, according to the NWS.
As far as the exact location and timing of the activity, the NWS says confidence is low to moderate until storms develop this afternoon.
Areas near and north of Interstate 20 in North Texas should prepare for potential impacts.
For Dallas-Fort Worth proper, the NWS expects rain from 3-9 p.m. Friday and thunderstorms from 9 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6.
Temperature drop over the weekend
Moderate storm chances are in the mix Saturday as temperatures plummet.
The NWS said there will be a 30 percent chance of storms before 10 a.m. and then until around 1 p.m. Saturday’s daily high will be in the upper 70s, with overnight lows in the upper 60s.
There’s a 20 percent chance of storms on Sunday, Sept. 7, after 1 p.m. The daily high will be in the mid-80s, with overnight lows again in the upper 60s.
Heading into next week, skies are expected to stay dry as temperatures warm back up to the upper 80s and low 90s.
