DFW and Love Field seeing fewer cancellations Friday as airlines scramble to resume flights
Dallas-Fort Worth and Love Field airports are seeing fewer cancellations Friday as airlines scramble to resume normal operations after the winter storm Thursday coated North Texas in ice and snow.
DFW posted on X that Friday will be a game of catch-up after more than two-thirds of flights were canceled the day before. As of 8:30 a.m., FlightAware was reporting that about 20% of today’s flights have been grounded.
Getting to the airport will still be tricky, though, as roads and highways across North Texas had varying amounts of ice and snow early Friday.
The airport recommends that travelers use the DFW mobile app to check TSA wait times, available security checkpoints and parking updates.
“Arrive early & drive with care,” the airport posted.
DFW also addressed social media posts “claiming that DFW is out of runway deicing materials.” Not true.
“We have ample supplies and crews have been working hard to keep the airfield moving safely as weather allows.”
Dallas Love Field is also seeing about 20% of Friday flights canceled. “We are open and operational. Please check your flight status with your airline before heading to DAL to be aware of any changes,” the airport posted on X.
Sleet and freezing rain on Thursday shortened the window of time deicing fluid is effective, rendering some flights temporarily unable to take off. Fort Worth-based American Airlines and its deicing vendor have enough fluid to deice planes for the duration of the winter storm.
“It’s been all-hands-on-deck for the American team — many of whom braved the weather to staff our airports, flights and operations center to take care of our customers and keep our airline moving,” the company said in a statement.
