More severe thunderstorms are expected overnight Tuesday with the possibility of producing “big hail again,” the National Weather Service reports.

“While we’ve got a bit of a lull in thunderstorm activity right now, another round of severe storms is expected overnight into early Wednesday morning,” read a tweet from the NWS Fort Worth. “These would have the potential to produce big hail again.”

Unstable weather is common in Texas during the summer. But according to the NWS, the difference this season has been the “anomalously strong wind shear.”

“It’s off-the-charts exceptional for June. This has been one of the main large hail contributors,” the NWS said in a tweet.

Wind shear tends to rotate air mass — and if moisture and an updraft are present — then storms can produce dangerous weather such as large hail and tornadoes.

Isolated storms will continue into Wednesday morning, continuing into midday, according to the NWS. Patchy fog is also possible in the morning across North Texas. Things will begin to clear up by the afternoon, and temperatures will begin to soar into the 100s across Central Texas.

Tarrant County is now under a severe thunderstorm watch until 9 p.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

“Scattered storms are expected across parts of North and Central Texas. One round is possible late this afternoon and evening, but better chances are expected over North Texas after midnight,” according to the NWS.

Large hail is the main concern for the storm tonight, but heavy rain is expected and flooding can be a problem, according to the NWS website. Damaging wind of up to 70 mph is also in the forecast.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Dallas County earlier in the afternoon with NWS reporting the storm over Cockrell Hill and moving east at 35 mph at 1:52 p.m. The warning is in effect until 2:45 p.m.

Scattered severe thunderstorms are expected Tuesday afternoon through the evening, the National Weather Service in Fort Worth says.

“Scattered storms are expected across parts of North and Central Texas off and on through tonight. Large hail is expected to the be the primary hazard, though a localized damaging wind threat will be possible with a complex of storms moving southeast across eastern North Texas this morning,” the hazardous weather outlook reads.

While not everyone will see storms, everyone should prepare of the potential of severe weather this afternoon and tonight, NWS Fort Worth said.

The main threat is very large hail, up to baseball size, and frequent lightning. There’s also a lower probability of damaging winds and heavy rain.

A flood advisory is also in effect, as heavy rain may lead to instances of flash flooding, primarily north of I-20.

“Isolated storms are possible Wednesday and Thursday,” NWS Fort Worth says. “Heat advisory criteria will likely be reached later this week with heat index values near 105 to 110 degrees.”

Following the storms, afternoon temperatures will climb into the mid 90s to lower 100s later this week, with heat index values reaching up to 110 degrees. North Texas is heading into the wicket hot portion of the summer. Take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses, including drinking plenty of water, wearing lightweight light-colored loose clothes, taking frequent breaks in the A/C or shade, avoiding spending time outdoors during the hottest part of the day, never leaving kids or pets unattended in a parked car and wearing sunscreen.

NWS Fort Worth urges North Texans to stay aware and have multiple ways to receive severe weather warnings.
