A major snow storm is expected to bring snow and blizzard conditions to the Midwest this week with snow stretching as far south as Oklahoma, but North Texas is expected to escape significant precipitation during the freeze.

A surge of Arctic air will drop temperatures into the single-digits in North Texas on Thursday with wind chills below zero.

A potential snowstorm Thursday and Friday could stretch from Kansas across the Midwest and into the Northeast, according to AccuWeather.

Flurries or sleet are possible when the cold front arrives in North Texas, but we are unlikely to see any snow or ice, according to Star-Telegram media partner WFAA Channel 8.

The freezing weather could last until Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

Thursday’s high will reach 42 before the cold front arrives around noon, sending temperatures into the 20s. Some light snow might accompany the cold front but no impacts are anticipated, the National Weather Service said. The overnight low will fall to 9. The highest gusts are expected Thursday morning and into the afternoon. The windy conditions should continue into Friday.

Prepare for the hazardous weather now: cover your exterior faucets, drip indoor faucets and open cabinets under sinks to protect pipes from freezing, the Weather Service said in its hazardous weather outlook.

Dangerous wind chills in the teens to below zero are expected Thursday through Saturday. Temperatures will drop to the lower 20s and wind chill values will be as low as zero in the afternoon.

Friday will be sunny with highs in the mid-20s and wind chills as low as 10 below zero in the morning. Lows Friday night will be 15 to 20. Saturday will be mostly sunny with highs in the lower 30s and an overnight low around 20. Christmas Day will see a slight warm up with highs in the lower 40s.
