Severe storms knock out power to more than 100,000 in North Texas area, Oncor reports
More than 100,000 North Texas customers were without power late Sunday night after severe thunderstorms swept across the area earlier in the afternoon and evening.
The Oncor outage map showed that the vast majority of customers, or about 94,000, were affected in Dallas County as of 8:50 p.m. Sunday. Just under 400 customers were experiencing outages in Tarrant County.
About 120 customers were without power in far southwest Fort Worth, and about 112 were affected in northwest Fort Worth in the River Oaks area.
The situation was far worse in the Dallas area. More than 57,000 customers had no power in an area just east of downtown. Another hard hit area was in south Dallas near Duncanville, where more than 18,000 were missing power.
Estimated restoration times for all these areas are unknown at this time, according to Oncor.
Much of Tarrant County was under a severe thunderstorm warning Sunday afternoon as storms suddenly popped up just north of the area before quickly moving to the south and southeast.
Hail and wind gusts up to 60 mph were possible in the affected area, according to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth.
There is a 30% chance of rain through 10 p.m. before skies become partly cloudy overnight, the weather service reported. Rain chances decrease to 20% on Labor Day with a forecast high of about 92 degrees.
