Severe weather may hit Fort Worth area Sunday evening. Here’s what you need to know

As a cold front is expected to move through the Dallas-Fort Worth area Sunday evening, residents can expect severe thunderstorms with the possibility of damaging winds, hail and isolated tornadoes.

The National Weather Service in Fort Worth said the storms are expected to last from around 6 p.m. Sunday into early Monday morning around 4 a.m. The weather is expected to move east.

“An upper level storm system will be approaching the region early next week, increasing rain chances late Sunday and Sunday night,” the weather service said. “Some storms may be strong to severe with damaging winds being the primary threat. Another storm system will move through the Plains by the middle of next week with additional storm chances and a threat for severe weather.”

Strong winds are the “primary hazard,” the National Weather Service said, with the potential for 60 mph gusts.

“A few tornadoes embedded in the line of storms also can not be ruled with the highest potential in parts of south central and southeast Oklahoma,” the weather service said.

There’s a possibility for more storms Tuesday and Wednesday, but the weather service added that “details on primary hazards are uncertain at this time.”

The severe weather comes after near-record-breaking heat. On Friday, the high in the DFW area was 95, just one degree shy of matching the area’s record-high 96 degrees in 1979.

Even through the Sunday storms, temperatures throughout the day are expected to stay in the high 90s before cooling down to a low of 64 in the evening.

Monday is expected to remain sunny, with a little cooler temperatures with a high near 86 and light winds.
