Humidity to spike this weekend in Fort Worth before possible record-tying heat Tuesday
Temperatures and humidity are expected to rise in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in the coming days, leading to a sweltering weekend and a potentially record-breaking high early next week.
It was expected to reach 97 degrees on Friday afternoon with a heat index value as high as 104, kicking off a string of hot days, according to the forecast from the National Weather Service in Fort Worth. The high is predicted to be around 98 on Saturday with a heat index value of 102, before dropping to near 97 on Sunday and near 95 on Monday. Expected heat index values weren’t available for those days.
The high temperature could reach 102 on Tuesday, according to the weather service. The record high for Fort Worth on June 9 is 102, set in 1911.
The reason the weather service is predicting this string of hot and uncomfortable days, starting with Friday, is because of a ridge of high pressure moving into the Dallas-Fort Worth region, according to weather service meteorologist Monique Sellers That, she said, will “dominate a lot of the weather over the next probably almost week.”
“We’re going to have this dome of heat that kind of sits over us,” she said. “We’re going to get some pretty high temperatures and several areas are going to see their first 100-day degree of the year sometime between now and next week.”
If Fort Worth hits 100 degrees on Tuesday, it would be the city’s first triple-digit day this year, according to the weather service.
On top of the heat, Sellers said, the rainfall from the past couple of weeks has created moisture in the atmosphere, which will lead to the high humidity values. “It’s going to feel pretty miserable out there,” she said.
She advises people planning to spend time outdoors this weekend and early next week to hydrate and take breaks.
The high temperatures should be “pretty even” across most of North Texas from Friday through Tuesday, she said. A cold front carrying dry air is expected to arrive on Wednesday, causing humidity to drop to more normal values.
Temperatures should drop slightly, too, according to the weather service. The high is expected to be around 94 on Wednesday and 95 on Thursday.
The weather service is still tracking the cold front, which could arrive on Tuesday instead of Wednesday, Sellers said. That could cause the high temperature that day to be closer to around 100, Sellers said.
