While Texas is in the middle of fall, the winter months will be here before you know it.

Texans still have over two months before the first day of winter on Dec. 21. This means there’s plenty of time for homeowners to prepare their home against winter pests.

Here’s what to know.

What are common pests in Texas during winter?

Many pests seek warmth, shelter and food inside homes during winter, according to Myles Pest Services.

  • Rodents: Rats and mice are often found in attics, basements and inside walls. Rodents can damage a home by chewing on wires and insulation, and also carry several viruses that pose health risks.
  • Insects: Ants, termites, cockroaches and bed bugs, are all active during the winter months. Each of these insects can contaminate surfaces, along with destroying personal belongings.
  • Arachnids: Spiders will look for warmth during the winter months. While most spiders are harmless, species such as the black widow and brown recluse can pose health risks due to their bites.
