A hero service dog is in a new home after a Texas shelter stepped in when the dog’s beloved owner became a patient in hospice.

When Kerrville Pets Alive put out a post advocating for a service dog named Callie, the response was overwhelmingly positive.

“For more than eight years, Callie — a sweet Australian shepherd — was more than a companion to her owner. She was a lifesaver,” the shelter said in an Aug. 30 Facebook post.

“As her owner’s service dog, Callie faithfully stayed by his side, alerting him whenever his breathing became faint.”

Her owner ended up moving to hospice, so the shelter stepped in to not only help Callie find a new home, but also to take care of medical needs she had.

“Kerrville Pets Alive! along with the Peterson Hospice Pet Peace of Mind program, has provided the medical care she needed — including a minor toe surgery. Callie is ready to begin her next chapter,” the shelter said.

“At 73 pounds, she is on a healthy slim-down plan. She enjoys belly rubs, naps and gentle companionship.”

The post had been liked over 1,600 times and shared almost 1,000 times, so it makes sense that Callie found a home quickly.

“We have great news! We were overwhelmed with interest in Callie. We have found the perfect placement for her where she will be loved and cared for,” the shelter said in an update.

Kerrville is about a 100-mile drive west from Austin.
