15-year-old shoots mom and sister after he makes disturbing 911 call, Texas cops say
A 15-year-old boy is accused of calling 911 before gunning down his mother and sister inside their Texas home, and police are saying marijuana edibles may be a factor behind the violence.
The incident happened at around 11 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at an apartment complex on Houston’s north side, police told KHOU.
Police say the teenager called 911 before the shooting and told dispatch he was going to kill himself or someone else, then hung up, the outlet reported. When the dispatcher called back, the teen’s mother answered and said there was nothing happening at the home, according to police.
However, at some point after the call, police say the teen got his hands on a gun and shot his mother and 17-year-old sister several times, KPRC reported. Both were taken to a hospital in critical condition.
“(Firefighters) encountered the suspect in the parking lot, suspect pointed the firearm at the firemen and stated he had just killed somebody, then threw his weapon at the firemen and took off running,” HPD Lt. J.P. Horelica told the station.
Officers arrived at the scene and caught the teen as he was running away, police said, KTRK reported.
Police “found that the 15-year-old suspect had just eaten a bunch of edibles, and I guess had a bad reaction to them,” Horelica told the station.
Another sister, who is 16, was also at the home but was unharmed, the station reported.
The teen hasn’t been publicly identified and investigators have not said if there are any other possible motives behind the shooting.
While marijuana often has a calming effect on users, much is still unknown about its effects on the brain in both the long and short term — and a growing body of evidence suggests marijuana may cause some to behave violently, according to the National Institutes of Health.
