A man kicking in the door of his ex-girlfriend’s apartment was shot to death when the woman’s son stepped in, Texas police said.

Wilbert Tayes, 49, was breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s Houston apartment the night of Feb. 12 when he was met by her 24-year-old son on the other side of the door, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a Feb. 13 post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Tayes tried to assault his ex’s son, but the man grabbed a pistol and shot him, according to deputies. Gonzalez said other people were in the apartment as this occurred.

The man was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the post.

A grand jury will investigate the shooting and determine if the 24-year-old was “within his right” to kill Tayes in self-defense, deputies said.
