A newborn with their umbilical cord still attached is fighting for their life after being found abandoned on a Texas sidewalk, authorities say.

A man made the discovery around 3:15 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, in the vicinity of downtown San Antonio, police said in a preliminary report.

“The newborn was inside a basket wrapped up in a towel breathing weakly with the umbilical cord still attached,” San Antonio police said in the report.

Authorities said the baby was taken to a hospital and was listed in critical condition.

Two women have been identified as suspects, but police have not announced any arrests.

KSAT reported the discovery was made during 27-degree weather, with a wind chill of 16 degrees.

“SAPD wants to remind anyone who feels they are unable to care for a newborn, they can bring the newborn to a designated safe place with no questions asked,” police said in a statement.
