Newborn found dead on sidewalk beside reusable grocery bag, California police say
An investigation is underway after a newborn was found dead on a California sidewalk beside a reusable grocery bag, police say.
The newborn was found on a residential street about two blocks from the 215 Freeway on Dec. 3, the San Bernardino Police Department said in a Dec. 13 Facebook post.
After getting a call from a passerby, officers found a baby on the ground wrapped in girl clothing, Detective Edgar Chavez with the police department said in a video news release.
The baby was “in the early stages of decomposition,” according to Chavez.
Initial investigation showed the baby was brought to the area in a blue reusable grocery bag, which officers found beside him, Chavez said.
The baby was between 2 and 3 weeks old, Capt. Nelson Carrington told The San Bernardino Sun.
Chavez said police are looking for information about the incident, adding that the department also “wants to ensure that the mother has the appropriate support and medical attention needed.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 909-384-5637.
San Bernardino is about a 60-mile drive east from Los Angeles.
