Man kidnaps, threatens to kill woman, then she sends ‘life-saving text,’ Texas cops say
A “life-saving text” led Texas police to a woman being abducted, authorities said.
The Brazoria County Dispatch received a text message to 911 on Nov. 2 from a woman saying “she was being held against her will in a moving vehicle,” according to a Nov. 4 news release from the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office.
Unable to make a phone call, the woman used the text service to tell authorities the driver, George Peters, of Houston, threatened to kill her and was intoxicated, according to the sheriff’s office.
Officers were able to intercept the vehicle and get the woman to safety, authorities said.
“This case underscores the importance of the Text to 911 service, which can be crucial for individuals in situations where making a voice call is unsafe,”the sheriff’s office said.
“Call if you can, text if you can’t,” authorities said.
Peters was arrested on charges that include unlawful restraint, unlawfully carrying a weapon, terroristic threat of a family and driving while intoxicated, jail records show. Attorney information for Peters was not available.
The Text-to-911 service is only available in certain areas. The Federal Communications Commission updates a list monthly of the areas that support Text-to-911.
Brazoria County is about a 40-mile drive south from Houston.
