Authorities said they have recovered the body of a 4-year-old boy who went missing while swimming with his family at a Texas lake.

The child’s body was found Nov. 5, one day after the body of his father, 29-year-old Pedro Aguirre, was pulled from the same lake, according to authorities and family members.

“You died a hero trying to save your family,” Miguel Villarreal said in a Nov. 4 Facebook post.

According to San Patricio County Sheriff Oscar Rivera, authorities began receiving calls about five people in distress at Catfish Cove in Lake Corpus Christi State Parks on Nov. 3.

Rivera told KIII the 4-year-old got caught in an undercurrent, and his family members went to help.

Rivera said a 2-year-old boy, a 20-year-old woman and an 18-year-old man were rescued, but Aguirre and his son “did not surface.”

“Lake water levels are extremely low but safety is paramount when swimming in unknown areas.,” Rivera said.

“It was some type of rip current, we’d never seen that before, but it was a whirlpool type of water going to the bottom,” Rivera told KIII, explaining why it was difficult to pull the victims out of the water.

The search for Aguirre and his son was a joint effort between the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the San Patricio County Sheriff’s Office, Constable Pct. 6, the Sandia Fire Department and the Mathis Fire Department, according to Rivera.
