‘Touches their heart:’ Locals contributed record donations for North Texas Giving Day
A new donation record has been set by North Texans.
Leaders of North Texas Giving Day said the event garnered $68.3 million for regional non-profits, bringing the 15-year total to $634 million.
“It (the generosity) just goes to who the people in North Texas are and how important the work of these nonprofits is,” Wayne White, CEO of Communities Foundation of Texas, said in an interview with WFFA. “The fact that we have 3,200 of them (nonprofits) says there’s something for everyone that touches their heart, and the citizens respond to it.”
White said 87,000 people donated at this year’s event, which supported more than 3,000 non-profits across 25 cause areas. The event was extended this year from one day to nearly three weeks.
Donations raised during the event, according to White, helped support half the operations budget for some charities.
“For some of the charities it is 80-90% of their budget for the year and for some of the larger ones, this is how they get new donors,” said White. “So this is big for our non profit partners.”
Nathaniel Lowe, a World Series champion for the Texas Rangers and a North Texas Giving Day ambassador also helped bring in donations by leading a group of players and other sports legends in fundraising for the event.
