Giving is important to Texans, which is why the state celebrates an annual online charity event called North Texas Giving Day.

This year, North Texas Giving Day has been extended from one day to nearly three weeks, from Sept. 1 through Sept. 19.

Millions of dollars are donated each year to support over 3,000 nonprofits across Texas through the charitable effort.

Here’s what you need to know about the annual event.

How North Texas Giving Day began

North Texas Giving Day was founded in 2009 by the Communities Foundation of Texas as a tool to help donors find non profits to support.

It began as an 18-hour online event designed to help people support local projects they care about in one central platform.

Each donation is paid in full to nonprofit organizations serving more than 25 cause areas in 20 counties in North Texas, according to the North Texas Giving Day website.

More than $60 million in donations made by 97,132 people in 2023 brought the 15-year total to $566 million for the community, organization officials said.

Several statewide organizations, including Stomping Ground Comedy, Litehouse Wellness, and Unbound Now, are hosting events to bring attention to their cause.

Online donations will continue to be accepted at northtexasgivingday.org. until Thursday, Sept. 19.

The Community Foundation is offering a quiz this year to help match people’s interests with a local cause. Those areas include youth education, human trafficking, homelessness, domestic violence, and more.

Visit the website to access the quiz and view the more than 3,200 nonprofit organizations on the list.
