Body of missing Texas National Guardsman from Arlington has been found
The body of 22-year-old Bishop Evans, who went missing after trying to save two migrants struggling in the Rio Grande Friday morning, was found Monday.
Evans was identified as an Arlington resident by the Texas Military Department on Sunday.
He joined the Texas Army National Guard in May 2019 and was a field artilleryman assigned to a regiment in New Braunfels. Evans had been involved in a mobilization to Kuwait and was assigned then for periods in Iraq to support special operations forces, according to the Texas Military Department.
The search for Evans began Friday morning. Authorities found his jacket and radio on land, which he had taken off before he jumped in the water.
Gov. Greg Abbott released a statement after Evans’ body was recovered and thanked the rescue teams.
“We are heartbroken to learn of the death of SPC Bishop E. Evans who was reported missing in Eagle Pass on Friday,” Abbott said in his statement. “Our National Guard soldiers risk their lives every day to serve and protect others and we are eternally grateful for the way SPC Evans heroically served his state and country.”
