Cop warns of roadside dangers — then he’s nearly hit by a truck in scary Texas video
A police officer in Texas dodged danger when a truck smashed into his patrol vehicle, plowing it into a tow wrecker, video shows.
Just minutes earlier, the officer warned a stranded driver of that same danger.
Lufkin police officer Cody Deal responded to a two-vehicle crash that didn’t have injuries early Thursday, according to a news release.
While waiting for the tow truck, Deal began talking to a driver involved in the wreck about “secondary” crashes, which occur when oncoming drivers hit vehicles stopped for accidents.
Deal said the police department hasn’t experienced one since an officer was hit last year. Officer Seth Thompson was hit by an SUV while investigating a crash in a parking lot, KYTX reported.
“But you watch YouTube or something like that — it’s all the time,” Deal said. “Rubberneckers and people get like moths to a flame — go straight at them lights and then don’t realize until you hit it.”
Less than five minutes later, Deal spotted a Dodge pickup truck speeding toward the crash scene.
“Watch out, watch out, watch out!” he yelled, running from the roadway.
Then the truck slammed into Deal’s patrol SUV, knocking it 50 feet into the tow truck, police said.
Although the tow truck driver was in the vehicle, neither he nor anyone at the scene was injured, police say.
The driver told investigators he was distracted by a vehicle on the other side of the road before crashing into the patrol SUV, police say.
“We’re releasing this video to bring awareness and remind everyone to MOVE OVER, SLOW DOWN for first responders,” the police department posted on Facebook.
