Here’s the one gift you should not give your kids this Christmas

As Santa prepares for the big day, he’s making sure there’s one thing he doesn’t bring to Texas kids this year:

Lottery tickets.

Texas Lottery officials are asking Santa and all residents across the state to not buy lottery tickets — scratch offs or drawings — for anyone younger than 18.

“Our games are designed to be entertaining stocking stuffers or holiday office party gifts, but they are not intended for youth,” said Gary Grief, executive director of the Texas Lottery.

That’s why the Texas Lottery teamed up with the National Council on Problem Gambling and McGill University’s International Centre for Youth Gambling Problems and High-Risk Behaviors.

Officials hope to draw attention the risks of underage gaming and stress that it’s against the law for Texans under the age of 18 to buy lottery tickets in Texas.

“We are proud to join ... (the) responsible gambling campaign to encourage players to gift responsibly this holiday season,” Grief said.

This is the 10th year the Texas Lottery has participated in this campaign.

The message this year: “Gift Responsibly. Lottery Tickets Aren’t Child’s Play.”

Anyone with a gambling problem is asked to call or text the National Problem Gambling Helpline at 1-800-522-4700.
