A Bridgeport High School bus carrying girls basketball players was involved in a two-vehicle crash while heading home from a tournament on Saturday night, the Granbury Independent School District announced.

The crash happened on Highway 51 south of Weatherford just before 10 p.m.

Five students — four age 14 and one age 15 — were taken to a Fort Worth hospital with minor injuries, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. Bridgeport High School also said the coach was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Granbury High School Principal Jeremy Ross was the first person on the scene and called 911. He helped get students out of the bus, the district said.

Pictures posted on social media show a school bus lying on its side with significant damage to the front engine.

The crash happened when a Chevrolet car that was southbound on FM 51 crossed the center line, into the northbound lane and hitting the bus head-on.

The car’s driver was taken to the hospital and a passenger was flown to John Peter Smith Hospital in critical condition.
