Humane Society officials asked for more help Monday to care for more than 300 malnourished animals, mostly longhorn cattle, seized from a ranch in Hill County.

Volunteers managed to find shelter for the cattle over the weekend before a bitter cold front arrived in North Texas.

On Monday, Humane Society of North Texas officials appealed for monetary donations to help with medical care for the animals.

And, volunteers were back out searching for more malnourished cattle Monday.

"We were called and notified that some cattle had wandered off the property," said Chief Deputy R.D. White of the Hill County Sheriff's Office in a Monday telephone interview. "There might be a dozen or so."

Authorities seized 338 animals last week after Hill County sheriff's deputies received a tip that cattle were malnourished and abused on the property.

At least 15 cows were found dead on the property, Humane Society spokeswoman Cassie Lackey said Monday.

"We still have some cattle in critical condition," Lackey said.

The animals were located on a 43-acre ranch near Farm Road 933 and County Line Road, about 55 miles south of Fort Worth.

A few Angus and other breeds of cattle were discovered malnourished on the property, but the majority of the animals were longhorns, authorities said.

A hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Friday in Hillsboro to determine if the cattle will be returned to their owner or stay with the Humane Society.

Authorities continue to investigate.
