Since July 2021, the carcinogen benzene has caused the recall of a number of products, most of which are deodorants and sunscreens.

What is recalled?

The Procter & Gamble Company issued a product recall on Friday concerning 32 aerosol dry shampoos and conditioners that were sold nationwide due to the presence of benzene in some of the products.

The brand names are familiar: Pantene, Aussie, Herbal Essences, Old Spice, Waterless and Hair Food.

The recall affects the dry shampoo products, not the liquid shampoos, conditioners, mousses, hairsprays, treatments or styling products manufactured by Procter & Gamble.

Why benzene is a concern

Benzene exposure, a carcinogen, can happen via inhalation, oral consumption, and through the skin and can cause cancers including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow. Also, blood disorders which can be life-threatening and fatal, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

What to look for

Product codes on the bottom of the aerosol cans are listed on a chart printed on the U.S. Food & Drug Administration alert.

Stop using the listed products, discard them or return to the store for a refund.
