Tarrant County still in spotlight after GOP vote on whether to oust Muslim from post
The spotlight this year has been on the Republican Party of Tarrant County.
A proposal to remove a vice chairman of the party — Shahid Shafi, a Muslim — drew nationwide attention as Tarrant County Republicans lined up on both sides of the issue.
Those pushing the vote to reconsider Shafi’s appointment said this was not about religion but whether Shafi is loyal to Islam and Islamic law or connected to “Islamic terror groups.”
Those supporting Shafi say this was about religion and a person’s faith.
The Tarrant County GOP executive committee, which is made up of precinct chairmen, voted on the issue, rejecting it, Jan. 10.
The Star-Telegram has been covering the issue since the beginning.
