One of Fort Worth’s assistant city managers is a finalist for the top job in Dallas
One of Fort Worth’s highest ranking city officials is looking for career advancement in that city 30 miles to the east.
Assistant city manager William Johnson was named as one of four finalists for Dallas city manager, according to a report obtained by Star-Telegram media partner WFAA.
Johnson joins interim Dallas city manager Kimberly Tolbert along with officials from Michigan and Georgia as finalists.
He would replace former city manager T.C. Broadnax, who left Dallas in February before becoming city manager in Austin three months later.
Both Dallas and Fort Worth use a council-manager form of government. While the mayor and city council set policy and make decisions on spending, the city manager is responsible for the government’s day-to-day operations.
Johnson has been with the city of Fort Worth since September 2019. He started as the director of the transportation and public works department before being promoted to assistant city manager in August 2022.
He oversees the city’s police, water, public events and economic development departments.
Fort Worth City Manager David Cooke announced in July 2024 he would step down in February 2025 after holding the position for over 10 years.
The council has not publicly discussed its process to replace Cooke, and has declined to use a national search firm to find his replacement.
Johnson declined to comment on his candidacy, in an email to the Star-Telegram.
