The JPS Health Network plans to break ground on a psychiatric emergency clinic and a medical clinic this year, almost four years after voters approved an $800 million hospital expansion.

President and CEO Karen Duncan told Tarrant County commissioners on Tuesday that the psychiatric emergency clinic would be built on the main campus. A medical clinic is planned for the Wedgwood neighborhood in Fort Worth. Duncan said the area was selected for the clinic because of its growth and that its residents tend to have lower incomes, are older than 65 and a have lower life expectancy.

Commissioner Devan Allen, who represents Precinct 2 in southeast Tarrant County, said her residents would be disappointed if a medical clinic is not built in their precinct. In November, Arlington leaders expressed frustration that there was a lack plans regarding the expansion of services, citing the city as an area of need.

Former JPS leader Robert Earley told the Star-Telegram at the end of October the network was looking into additional funding opportunities for the expansion and that he didn’t know if the construction would cost more than what was passed in the bond since ground hadn’t been broken.
