Mega Millions player misses jackpot, still wins big. Where in US was ticket sold?

A Mega Millions player fell one number short of winning the jackpot, but still won a huge prize.

The ticket for the Oct. 24 drawing was bought in Connecticut, according to the Mega Millions website.

The player matched five of the winning numbers but missed the Mega ball.

With a multiplier of 2, the player won $2 million.

The winning numbers were 11, 18, 31, 51, 56 with a Mega Ball of 24.

No one won the $680 million jackpot, which rises to an estimated $714 million with a cash payout of $334.1 million for the next drawing on Tuesday, Oct. 28.

More than 480,000 other players in the U.S. won prizes ranging from $10 to $50,000.

What to know about Mega Millions

To score the jackpot in the Mega Millions, a player must match all five white balls and the gold Mega Ball. The odds of scoring a jackpot prize are 1 in 290,472,336.

Tickets cost $5 and can be bought on the day of the drawing, but sales times vary by state.

Drawings are held Tuesdays and Fridays at 11 p.m. ET and can be streamed online.

Mega Millions is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
