An Indiana man accused of shooting his wife to death at a cemetery has been found guilty, officials told news outlets.

Jeremy Hinson, 49, was found guilty of murder in the 2024 killing of his wife, Michela Hinson, the Madison County Prosecutor’s Office said in an Aug. 21 news release.

McClatchy News reached out to Jeremy Hinson’s attorney for comment but didn’t immediately receive a response.

On June 26, 2024, deputies responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle at the Forrestville Cemetery in Elwood, WTHR reported. According to officials, the caller said an SUV was parked in the back of the cemetery with a man and woman inside, neither of whom reacted when he knocked on the window.

Deputies arrived to find Jeremy Hinson unresponsive in the passenger seat and his wife dead behind the wheel, having been shot multiple times, the station reported. At some point, Jeremy Hinson became aware of the officers and got out of the SUV. Deputies then patted him down and found a handgun and extra magazine in his pants, officials said.

Jeremy Hinson was taken to a hospital for treatment for a possible drug overdose, investigators said, the station reported.

While at the hospital, deputies say they noticed blood splattered all over Jeremy Hinson’s body, on his hands, arms, ankles, eyelids and forehead, The Herald Bulletin reported.

Investigators searched the couple’s SUV, finding multiple shell casings on the floor and bullet holes in the seat where Michela Hinson had been, according to the outlet. An autopsy revealed she had been shot seven times at very close range, with the barrel nearly touching her as the weapon fired — six shots hitting her in the torso and one in the arm, officials said.

Following his arrest, Jeremy Hinson told family “I feel most bad for the boys in this situation,” the outlet reported. “Obviously I wasn’t thinking right. I don’t know what happened to make me do that, but tell them I love them.”

Michela Hinson was “one of the kindest people you could ever meet,” her obituary read. “Her smile and upbeat demeanor left all of those around her feeling happy.”

“She was honest to a fault and always told you how she felt. She touched the lives of many ... (and) leaves behind a legacy of love and selflessness,” the obituary said, adding that she is survived by her two sons who “will always remember the love she gave them.”

In addition to the murder charge, a jury also found Jeremy Hinson guilty of a federal firearm enhancement, the prosecutor’s office said.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for Sept. 28 and he could be sentenced to at least 50 years in prison, according to officials.

Elwood is about a 50-mile drive northeast from Indianapolis.
