A woman was run over and killed in a business parking lot while holding her 1-year-old daughter, Michigan authorities say.

Michigan State Police said troopers discovered the 29-year-old woman “lying face down on the ground unresponsive” outside Alex’s Market & Grill on July 27 in Holly Township.

She was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said.

An investigation revealed the woman, who has not been identified, was removing or putting another child inside her vehicle as she was holding her 1-year-old, according to state police.

Investigators said a 72-year-old man driving a pickup truck pulled out of his parking spot, then ran over the mother and her infant.

The 1-year-old was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, according to state police, who said the driver remained on the scene.

The driver was arrested, troopers said, but formal charges have not been filed as of July 28.

“It does appear at this time that impaired driving is the cause of this crash,” First Lt. Mike Shaw said in a statement. “While many drivers are aware of the impacts of alcohol while driving, we continue to remind drivers the same is true for drug impairment. It does not matter if they are prescribed drugs, marijuana or over the counter, they all impact your ability to drive.”

Holly Township is about a 55-mile drive northwest from Detroit.
