A 2-year-old died from their injuries after being hit by a car in the parking lot of a Savannah-area Walmart, Georgia police said.

The crash happened Friday, June 14, at a Walmart Neighborhood Market in Hinesville, the city’s police department said in a Facebook post.

Authorities believe the toddler darted into the parking lot in front of a Jeep, Assistant Chief Terranova Smith told WTOC.

The child was taken to Liberty Regional Medical Center, where they died, police said. Authorities didn’t release the toddler’s identity.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the child’s family and all those involved during this incredibly difficult time,” the department said in a statement.

Police didn’t provide additional details but said the investigation is ongoing.

Hinesville is about a 40-mile drive southwest from downtown Savannah.
