A father-in-law followed his daughter-in-law out of a hotel as she was leaving a wedding and fatally shot her, Illinois police said.

Ronald Schmidt was upset at his daughter-in-law, 45-year-old Christine Moyer, because of divorce paperwork filed against his son, Schaumburg police said.

The 76-year-old shot Moyer once in the head on July 25, police said. He was held at the scene by a bystander until authorities arrived, according to officials in a July 27 news release.

Moyer was taken to the hospital, where she died from her injuries, police said.

Schmidt was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, according to police. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 28.

Schaumburg is about a 30-mile drive west northwest from downtown Chicago.
