16-year-old shot during argument in park crashes trying to drive away, AL cops say
A 16-year-old was shot after an argument at a park and crashed trying to drive away, police in east Alabama said.
Officers responded to the shooting after 8:30 p.m. June 7 in Bandy Park where they found Jamiyah Grant with a gunshot wound, the Opelika Police Department said in a June 8 news release.
After hitting another car while trying to drive away, she was taken to a hospital where she died, police said.
According to investigators, a group of people at the park got into an argument before the shooting. Police currently don’t know what the argument was about.
Timothy Shell Jr., 18, was identified as the suspected shooter and was arrested June 8, police said. Officials did not say what charges he may face.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic and senseless death of Jamiyah Grant,” Opelika Mayor Gary Fuller said in a Facebook post by the city. “My thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, and loved ones. This tragedy has shocked and saddened the entire community.”
Police said the investigation is ongoing.
Opelika is about a 60-mile drive northeast from Montgomery.
