Fake Amazon workers hold mom and daughter hostage in home invasion, FL cops say
Three fake Amazon delivery drivers forced their way into a home and held a mother and daughter there for hours until the father came home, Florida authorities said.
The North Port Police Department is looking for the three accused robbers, whose identities are currently unknown.
The trio of males posing as Amazon workers showed up at a home the afternoon of May 23 and convinced an adult daughter to answer the door, police said.
When she opened the door, one pointed a gun at her and they forced their way inside, then they “ransacked” the house looking for money, according to officers.
They reportedly found $5,000, then when they finished going through the house, they held the daughter and her mother hostage for over three hours until the dad returned, police said.
He got home shortly before 5 p.m. and found the front door locked, although it normally wasn’t, officers said. He went around to the back door when he encountered one of the accused robbers on the porch, police said.
They began fighting, then all three of the accused robbers fled through the neighborhood’s backyards until they found an unlocked pickup truck with the keys inside, according to officers.
They’re accused of stealing the truck and later ditching it at a shopping center in Port Charlotte.
“Random robberies such as this are highly uncommon in our community,” police said. “We are strongly looking into this as a targeted incident. It is highly likely that those responsible are not from North Port.”
Officers said they collected items from inside the home and from nearby backyards. The investigation is ongoing.
North Port is in southwest Florida, about a 45-mile drive northwest from Fort Myers.
