A senior dog in Indiana was left shattered after his family decided to pack up and leave him behind, a shelter said.

Johnny Appleseed, a terrier, pit bull mix, is no stranger to the Humane Society for Hamilton County in Fishers — he met his family there eight years ago when they adopted him, his pet profile says. Now, he’s back at the shelter after his family said they were moving and couldn’t take the lovable old man with them.

“Sweet Johnny Appleseed spent 8 years of his life with the only family he’s ever known—until recently, when they moved and left him behind,” the shelter said in a March 11 Facebook post. “Now at 10 years old, this gentle soul is back in the shelter, confused, heartbroken, and longing for the comfort of a home again.”

Johnny is a well-mannered pup who just wants to snuggle up on the couch with his favorite human, his profile says. A new owner would have to be patient with him and respect his space from the get-go, per the shelter. But once he’s comfortable, his lovable nature comes spilling out.

“Johnny isn’t asking for much—just a soft place to nap, a few car rides (his favorite!), and someone to love him through his golden years. He’s house-trained, affectionate, and has lived peacefully with respectful kids and other dogs. He’s the kind of companion who will rest his head on your lap and remind you what unconditional love really looks like,” the shelter said.

“The shelter is no place for a senior dog, especially one who gave his heart to a family for nearly a decade. He’s grieving, but he still has so much love to give. All he needs is someone patient and kind to give him a second chance.”

For more information on Johnny, visit the shelter’s website.

Fishers is a 20-mile drive north from Indianapolis.
