A dog in Philadelphia is in need of some serious help — and love — after being abandoned by a stranger at a shelter.

Little is known about Ranger’s history, since the gentle dog was brought into the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) by someone who claimed the dog wasn’t his, the shelter said in a March 7 Facebook post.

“Looking into Ranger’s crystal blue eyes, you see something extraordinary—not just their dazzling hue, but a story of resilience,” the shelter said.

“When Ranger arrived at our shelter last week, the situation couldn’t have been clearer. A stranger walked through our doors with him, mumbled that the dog wasn’t his, and when questioned further, simply left—without Ranger.”

It’s easy to see that not only was Ranger weak with his bones visible through his golden coat, but he had an odd injury to his head, the shelter detailed.

“What we witnessed was heartbreaking: bones protruding from his ravaged body and a mysterious injury to his head. Was he struck? Burned?” the shelter asked on Facebook. “We’ll never know what horrors this gentle soul endured before finding safety with us. But in those soulful blue eyes was an unmistakable plea—for care, for healing, for the love he had been denied.”

Currently, the sweet dog is on the mend at the shelter.

“Today, Ranger is on a carefully monitored refeeding plan, his wounds are being treated, and he’s finally experiencing what kindness feels like,” the shelter said.

Ranger is not available for adoption at this time.

For more information on other adoptable animals, visit the shelter’s website.
