A lottery club in Michigan is celebrating after one of them purchased a winning ticket.

A member of the New Beginnings Lottery Club purchased a Mega Millions ticket at a Wayne Med Market location in Westland, according to a Feb. 28 news release from the Michigan Lottery. The winners plan to use the money to pay off debts and bills, then save the rest.

“The club doesn’t play Mega Millions often, but felt lucky and decided to buy a ticket,” club spokesperson Anthony Jabbour said, according to the lottery. “When our member with the ticket checked the numbers and saw five matches, he cried tears of joy!”

The club matched the five white balls in the Nov. 5 drawing, 02, 24, 25, 52 and 58, winning $1 million total. The members collected their prize recently, according to the Michigan Lottery.

“To be debt-free is what we have all dreamed about, so to see that become a reality is truly a dream come true,” Jabbour told lottery officials.

Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli congratulated the club on its win.

“All Lottery players dream of winning big, and this is just one example of that dream coming true for a group of Michiganders,” Shkreli said.

Westland is about a 30-mile drive west of Detroit.

What to know about Mega Millions

To score the jackpot in the Mega Millions, a player must match all five white balls and the gold Mega Ball. The odds of scoring a jackpot prize are 1 in 302,575,350.

Tickets cost $2 and can be bought on the day of the drawing, but sales times vary by state. Officials have announced they will cost $5 starting in April.

Drawings are held Tuesdays and Fridays at 11 p.m. ET and can be streamed online.

Mega Millions is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
