A dog in Nebraska is in danger of suffering from kennel depression after spending almost a year in a shelter, waiting for a family to notice him.

Duramax, a German Shepherd mix, is a pretty relaxed dog who has been at the Central Nebraska Humane Society in Grand Island since May 2024, a Facebook post said. He’s been pretty chill, but the weight of constantly being overlooked is starting to get under his fur.

“Duramax is an 8 year old Shepherd who has been sitting on our shelter for 290 days now. That is a long time for any dog, but for an older man, it pricks at our hearts a bit more,” the shelter said in a Feb. 27 post.

“290 days of watching other dogs who came in after him get adopted before him.

290 days of sleeping on a cement floor instead of a couch/bed.

290 days of hoping his family would come for him.

290 days of doing his best to keep his spirits alive.”

Even for an independent dog, Duramax is starting to feel the kennel stress settle in, the shelter said.

He would be best suited for a chill environment, to match his calm temperament.

“I am an older dog so life with me is best in a calm and spacious environment. Chaos? Not my thing. Small kids or overly busy homes?” his pet profile says. “They can be a bit much for me. I like to take my time to feel comfortable, so I’d love a house with a backyard where I can stretch out, roam and enjoy some needed solo time in the sun.”

Other highlights of Duramax include:

  • Not clingy

  • Super sweet

  • Intelligent

  • Loving

  • Exploring outside

“When it comes to other dogs, I’m selective. I get along best with calm, chill dogs like me-no young and wild party animals please! And just to be upfront: cats are a no-go. They’re a little too exciting for me, if you catch my drift,” his profile says.

For more information on Duramax or other adoptable pets, visit the shelter’s website.

Grand Island is about a 150-drive southwest from Omaha.
